Sod Turning Marks the Beginning of New Fieldhouse at Dakota!

The dream of a Fieldhouse at Dakota Community Centre took another step closer to reality on November 10, when representatives from the Province, the City and Dakota turned the sod to mark the beginning of construction.

Joining Board President Tom Thiessen and CEO Michele Augert with shovels and kind remarks were, Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman, Theresa Oswald, MLA for Seine River, Christine Melnyk, MLA for Riel, and City Councillor Brian Mayes. Many partners, supporters and friends from the community, along with staff, past and present Board members and volunteers, braved the chill and threat of rain to be there to witness this historic day for the Centre.

With the sod turned, Ft3 Architecture and Landscape Interior Designs are busy competing the design details, while preparations are underway for the arrival of Bird Construction, who will begin to erect fencing around the construction site in the coming weeks.

Plans for the 60,000 square foot multi-use facility have been under serious discussion since 2011 when, the first funding commitments were made. Since then, many have worked collaboratively and cooperatively to see this project come to life.

The new Fieldhouse is expected to open in spring 2017.
